Paula is a drama teacher, director, theatrical performer and puppeteer. She developed her enjoyment and combined skills of mask and costume making and cartooning, into the art of puppet making many years ago. Recently Paula has been teaching drama and puppetry to school aged students locally in Cobourg. She has had her classes and performances in local papers several times, and continues to offer affordable priced classes and camps to the kids of Northumberland County.
Paula demonstrates from her home studio known as The Puppet Room. She has a home designed and made Puppet Theatre especially for the needs of her students and for performances. Paula incorporates all aspect of the theatre arts in her classes, and encourages her students to enjoy and learn from the environment, taking classes down to the beach to look for rocks, pebbles, feathers and driftwood, to use in making puppets.
Students are encouraged to make use of their unused household items, recycling them into puppet body parts, clothing and puppet scenery. Paula teaches paint brush techniques, clay head sculptor, sewing, caricatures, colour art, paper mache modelling, mask designing and making, performance techniques, voice and dialect skills, etc., encouraging students to develop their own technique of puppet making.
"I have never been happier than when working with a puppet student as they design and make 'something' out of 'nothing'. It's pure genius. It's pure art!"
